Northiam Twinning Association

We have been twinned for 10 years with Calonne-sur-la-Lys, a village in Northern France, about 80km (50 miles) south-east of Calais.

Lille and Bethune are the nearest large towns. Calonne is set in a flat and open landscape, and has a population of less than half of Northiam.  The area suffered greatly in both World Wars and so most of the buildings date from the middle of the 20th century. Although the two villages have many differences, our reasons for Twinning are the same - to promote a warmth and friendship between our residents.
The Association receives modest funding from the Parish Council and Committee members pay all of their own expenses, but our programme of events, including coach trips, Quiz nights and presence at the Village Fair, together with members' subscriptions, assists our funding as well as raising and maintaining our profile.  Each year we help organise and fund an exchange day trip for children at Northiam Primary School with children from Calonne's Ecole Marcel Pagnol. We currently have around 50 members, although all our events are open to anyone.
